Criminalizing Poverty, Monetizing Crime
I paid my bills for years. Rent, utilities, food. On time, no excuses. Then life pulled the rug out, jobs dried up, and suddenly I’m treated like society’s delinquent. Meanwhile, the government treats war like Netflix. An auto renewing subscription, billed to us, with no “cancel” button.
They’ll spend billions blowing things up overseas while ignoring the millions collapsing at home. Because I’m feeling petty af, here’s a list of contradictions.
Defense & Government Priorities
Defense vs. Housing – We spend $800+ billion on defense but can’t cover housing vouchers so people stop freezing on sidewalks. War gets penthouse money; citizens get basement scraps.
HUD vs. Pentagon – HUD asks for pocket change. The Pentagon swallows the whole pie cart and demands seconds.
Veterans vs. Defense Contractors – A veteran waits months for a VA appointment. Lockheed Martin cashes billion-dollar checks on time, every fucking time.
Food vs. Weapons – Families ration groceries while defense CEOs post record profits and buy yachts.
Congressional Math – Housing or healthcare? “No money.” New fighter jet? “How fast can we cut the check?”
National Security vs. Human Security – The Pentagon fails audits, can’t account for trillions, but if I lose $40 in my checking account the bank slaps me with a $35 overdraft fee.
Foreign Aid vs. Human Aid – Foreign “aid” looks a lot like weapons contracts. Meanwhile, Americans ration ramen and skip meals.
Support the Troops vs. Support the Families – We “support the troops” in speeches, but won’t support the families stuck in eviction court.
Economy & Inequality
Corporate Cheats vs. Citizens – A billionaire hides cash offshore? Champagne at Davos. I miss one rent payment? Sheriff at my fucking door.
Corporate Welfare vs. Human Welfare – Corporate subsidies are “investment.” Food stamps are “handouts.” Make it make sense.
“Financial Literacy” vs. Rigged Economy – They tell us to budget harder while the dollar itself buys less every week.
Taxes vs. Tax Dodgers – I forget a 1099? Audited. Billionaires dodge billions? Front row at Davos.
“Rising Wages” vs. Rising Costs – Wages inch up 3%, but rent, groceries, and gas climb 15%. Congrats, you’re richer on paper and poorer in reality.
Work vs. Wages – Two jobs = still broke. Meanwhile, the CEO who works 3 hours a week owns three homes.
Full-Time Work vs. Poverty – One job should keep you afloat yet millions work 40+ hours and still qualify for food stamps.
Unemployment vs. Hiring – Millions can’t find work. Employers demand 5 years’ experience for “entry-level” jobs.
“Meritocracy” vs. Nepotism – Work hard, they say, while half the rungs are blocked by someone’s cousin with a trust fund.
Housing & Survival
“Affordable Housing” vs. Reality – They slap “affordable” on apartments priced at $1,800/month and call it progress.
Housing vs. Luxury Builds – “No budget” for affordable housing, but cranes stay busy building condos no local can afford.
Homelessness vs. Budgets – Over 770,000 people were homeless on one night last year. But sure, tell me we “can’t afford” to fix it.
Encampment Sweeps vs. Solutions – Cities bulldoze tents and call it “cleaning up.” People aren’t trash.
Healthcare & Well-Being
Healthcare vs. Profits – I can’t afford a doctor’s visit. Big Pharma hikes insulin 300% and calls it “innovation.”
“Best Healthcare in the World” vs. Bankruptcy – One ER visit can erase your savings faster than you can say “co-pay.”
Mental Health vs. Hustle Culture – We’re drowning in burnout, and the advice is, “Have you tried journaling?”
Mental Health Awareness vs. Actual Care – Everyone loves to tweet “check on your friends,” but try finding an affordable therapist.
Big Food vs. Big Pharma – Corporations feed us garbage that makes us sick, then Big Pharma sells us pills to manage it.
Childcare vs. Corporate Subsidies – Parents drown in daycare bills. Corporations deduct yacht parties as “team building.”
Food & Costs of Living
Healthy Eating vs. Food Prices – Doctors tell us to eat better, but a salad costs $12 while a burger’s still $1.29.
Groceries vs. Shrinkflation – Eggs are a luxury, cereal boxes shrink, and grocery chains brag about record profits.
Food Deserts vs. Fast Food – Whole neighborhoods can’t get fresh produce but have six fast-food chains in three blocks.
Work & Culture
“Essential Workers” vs. Disposable Paychecks – They called us heroes in 2020. Now they pay us like dirt in 2025.
Job Openings vs. Scheduling Abuse – “Jobs everywhere” means part-time gigs with no benefits and on-call chaos.
Work-Life Balance vs. Hustle Culture – Companies hand out wellness webinars while demanding 60-hour weeks.
Celebrities Preach Frugality vs. Brand Deals – Rich celebs tell us to “budget better” while cashing seven-figure brand checks.
Justice & Rights
Democracy vs. Lobbyists – My one vote vs. their million-dollar dinner. Guess who wins.
Equal Justice vs. Bail System – Rich folks post bail and go home. Poor folks rot in jail.
“Rule of Law” vs. Who Can Afford Lawyers – Justice isn’t blind — it’s pay-to-play.
Civil Rights vs. Surveillance State – We’re “free,” but our phones and credit reports track us 24/7.
Freedom vs. Reality – “Land of opportunity.” Work until you die and maybe get a GoFundMe funeral.
Education
Education = Success vs. Crushing Debt – College is sold as the ticket out of poverty. Reality: lifetime debt.
Student Loans vs. Bailouts – I must repay every dime. Airlines screw up? Instant billion-dollar bailout.
Underpaid Teachers vs. Overfunded Administrations – Teachers work two jobs; university presidents make CEO pay.
STEM Push vs. Job Market – “Learn to code,” they said, while half the coding jobs get outsourced or eaten by AI.
Climate & Environment
Climate Summits vs. Corporate Jets – Leaders fly private to climate conferences, then tell us to recycle harder.
Plastic Bans vs. Corporate Loopholes – We’re told to stop using straws while corporations dump tons of plastic into oceans.
Green Energy vs. Energy Bills – “Go green” they say — while our utility bills climb and fossil fuel subsidies stay.
Tech & Control
Tech Promises vs. Reality – AI was supposed to make life easier. Instead, it’s making billionaires richer.
Free Speech vs. Algorithm Control – We can “say anything,” but if the algorithm buries it, it’s like we never spoke.
Utilities vs. Infrastructure – My bill skyrockets while the grid collapses in a storm.
Absurd Reality Checks
Asking Congress to fund housing instead of war is like asking a toddler to eat broccoli when cake exists.
America runs on Dunkin’, if Dunkin’ was owned by Raytheon.
We live in a slot machine economy pull the lever, hope your paycheck lands on “Paid Rent” instead of “Eviction Notice.”
This isn’t “the land of the free.” It’s the land of the fee late fees, overdraft fees, eviction fees, “oops, you’re poor” fees.
If you’re broke, burnt out, or terrified, it’s not because you’re a failure. It’s because the government runs a rigged casino where citizens lose and corporations never do.
They don’t want citizens, they want subscribers to the Empire Plus package. Benefits include: disappointment, burnout, and a front-row seat to potholes that never get fixed.
But hey, at least freedom isn’t free.
It costs my mortgage, your groceries, and our future.
I don’t plan to pay them back, I plan to make sure everyone knows why I couldn’t.
Thank You Note
I’m hurt. I feel betrayed by the very systems that are supposed to protect us. I’m angry. I’m scared. This is not what life should feel like, and it’s exhausting. I’m tired of being taken advantage of.
Through all of this, you’ve stood beside me, reading, sharing, commenting, subscribing, even when you don’t agree with every word. That support means more than you know. I know I’m not alone.
Thank youuu 🖤

We live in an IDIOCRACY where finance and economics is upside down.
They always have money for fucking wars and corporate welfare but nothing for the people.
Dummies talk like inflation was caused by the COVID unemployment checks. Nope, it's because the top down bailouts threw tons of money at the already wealthy corporations and banks who just “reinvest” (gamble) on commodities.
Had they given the people that money, the economy would have improved…many would have paid off debts etc.
But murica is an IDIOCRACY.
Mariah, you captured exactly what so many of us feel. The way you laid out the contradictions, with billions for war while people struggle for rent and food, shows just how backwards the system is. Your words carry both the anger and the honesty we need right now. Thank you for giving voice to it.
